Join us for an immersive coastal foraging course tailored for sea kayakers. This unique experience will blend sea kayaking with the art of foraging, offering an unparalleled introduction to the UK's coastal bounty from a paddlers perspective.

During the course, you'll learn to identify and enjoy 10-15 edible species, and our expert guide will teach you the essentials of species identification, using ID resources, and provide insights into foraging law, ethics, and ecology.

Led by an expert forager and a sea kayak leader, you'll paddle between foraging sites, exploring diverse marine environments. There will be opportunities to prepare some of our finds, giving you a taste of the coast's natural flavours.

This course is perfect for those looking to enhance their kayaking adventures with the added skill of foraging. Discover the hidden treasures of the coastline and enjoy a truly unforgettable experience.

Your foraging guide will be Emma Cronin of Wild Pickle, a seasoned sea kayaker, expert fermenter, and dedicated forager. This year, Emma will spend three months living solely on foraged foods, showcasing her extensive knowledge and expertise. We can't wait for everyone to benefit from her experience.

Equipment

To enable you to focus entirely on the foraging we advise that if you have your own kit, you should use it, however we have some equipment available for those who need it. There will be time to get equipped on the first day of the course. Please see the equipment page for more information about what we have available.

Additional items you may want to bring for foraging:

              Stove and pans.

              Mug for tea.

Items to keep warm during an extended stops.

Kayak footwear suitable for walking on rocks.

Basic fishing equipment (if you have it).

A container for your foraged goodies.

Course Structure:

The course begins at 9:00 a.m. at the Sea Kayaking UK/Celtic Paddles Factory in Holyhead, Anglesey. Most days run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

On the two-day course we will delve deeper in to coastal foraging and may be able to forage in a greater variety of environments.

On the day, the guides will spend some time getting to know the group and develop a plan based on the environmental conditions. Before heading off, you'll be issued with any required equipment and load up the trailer or cars.

After some foraging at around 1:00 p.m., there will be a stop for lunch. We hope to eat some foraged foods at lunchtime; however, it is advisable to carry some food of your own. If you have one, you may also want to bring your stove and cook kit to experiment with your foraged goodies. By 4:30 p.m., you should be back at base.

Please declare any dietary requirements in advance as some foraged condiments will be provided.
