Two-day assessment window with Stuart Leslie | Anglesey, North Wales

Undertake your Paddle UK Advanced Sea Kayak Leader (Tidal) assessment in the challenging tidal waters around Anglesey.

A two-day window is reserved for the assessment. Depending on the conditions and the opportunities available to observe all the required assessment areas, the assessment may be completed in one day or may continue into the second day.

Candidates must remain available and prepared to paddle on both days. The assessor will decide when sufficient evidence has been gathered to complete the assessment.

What will be assessed?

Candidates must demonstrate the required standard across four principal areas:

• Personal paddling skills
• Rescue skills
• Safety, leadership and group-management skills
• Theory and underpinning knowledge

The assessment will normally take place through a real sea kayak journey. Candidates will be expected to take responsibility for planning and leading, making sound decisions, managing the group and responding appropriately to the environment and any situations that develop.

Assessment format

• A two-day assessment window is reserved.
• Candidates must be available for both days.
• The assessment may be completed on the first day if the conditions allow the assessor to observe sufficient evidence across all the required areas.
• If further evidence is required, or the available conditions restrict what can reasonably be assessed, the assessment may continue into the second day.
• The location and journey will be selected according to the weather, sea state and tidal conditions.
• The final meeting point and arrangements will be confirmed close to the assessment.

Reserving two days does not mean candidates will automatically paddle for two full days. It provides the time and flexibility needed to conduct a fair and thorough assessment in a condition-dependent environment.

Mandatory prerequisites

The Advanced Sea Kayak Leader has a formal registration requirement. Before attending the assessment, every candidate must:

• Be at least 18 years old.
• Hold current full membership of their National Association, such as Canoe Wales, Paddle UK, Paddle Scotland or Paddle Northern Ireland.

• Hold one of the following navigation qualifications:

  Either:

  • Weather, Tides, Surf and Swell eLearning
  • Navigation for Paddlers eLearning
  • Open Crossings eLearning

  Or:

  • Open Water Navigation and Tidal Planning (OWNTP)

  Or:

  • An accepted equivalent qualification
• Hold appropriate safeguarding training dated within the preceding three years.
• Hold a two-day first-aid qualification dated within the preceding three years.
• Complete formal Advanced Sea Kayak Leader registration through their National Association.
• Provide confirmation of registration to the assessor before the assessment.

Candidates should only apply for registration once all the prerequisites are complete and correctly recorded on their membership account.

Paddle UK recommends registering at least two weeks before the assessment so that there is time to resolve any problems.

The current Paddle UK Awarding Body registration fee is £42. This is paid separately by the candidate and is not included in the assessment fee. Registration does give free or discounted access to useful learning resources.

Required experience and readiness

Although these are not additional certificates required for registration, candidates must have sufficient experience to perform consistently at Advanced Sea Kayak Leader standard.

The award is intended for experienced paddlers who want to lead sea kayak journeys in advanced tidal waters, including environments involving:

• Winds exceeding Beaufort Force 4
• Tidal races and strong tidal flow
• Exposed headlands
• Open crossings
• Swell and rough water
• Challenging or exposed coastlines

Candidates should arrive with:

• Strong and dependable personal paddling skills
• Substantial experience in advanced tidal environments
• Well-developed journey-planning and navigation skills
• Experience of leading and managing groups
• Reliable rescue and incident-management skills
• Sound judgement when selecting venues, routes and contingency plans
• Suitable fitness for a demanding assessment that may extend across two days
• A fully equipped and appropriate sea kayak

Formal Advanced Sea Kayak Leader training is recommended but is not mandatory. Candidates are responsible for deciding, with appropriate advice where necessary, whether they have completed sufficient preparation and gained enough relevant experience before presenting themselves for assessment.

Candidates should be able to answer yes to all the following:

• I am at least 18 years old.
• I hold current full National Association membership.
• I have completed the required navigation learning or hold an accepted equivalent.
• My safeguarding training is less than three years old.
• My two-day first-aid qualification is less than three years old.
• My qualifications are correctly recorded on my membership account.
• I have completed Advanced Sea Kayak Leader registration.
• I can provide my registration confirmation to the assessor.
• I have read the current Advanced Sea Kayak Leader Assessment Guidance.
• I have sufficient recent leadership and paddling experience in advanced tidal water.
• I am available for both days of the assessment window.

Candidates who cannot provide confirmation of registration and the required prerequisites will not be eligible to undertake the assessment.

What to bring

Candidates will need to bring:

• A suitable and properly outfitted sea kayak (we can provide a kayak if needed)
• Paddle and spare paddle (we can provide paddles if needed)
• Spraydeck
• Buoyancy aid
• Helmet
• Suitable paddling clothing
• Personal and group towing equipment
• Navigation equipment
• Appropriate safety and rescue equipment
• Means of summoning assistance
• Food and drink for a full day on the water
• Any medication or other personal requirements
• Evidence of registration and prerequisites where requested

Stuart is an experienced professional sea kayak guide with extensive knowledge of Anglesey’s coastline and tidal waters.

His assessment approach is supportive, practical and candidate-focused. Candidates will be given appropriate opportunities to demonstrate their ability while remaining responsible for the leadership decisions expected at Advanced Sea Kayak Leader level.

Important information about conditions

Sea kayak leadership assessments depend upon suitable environmental conditions.

While every reasonable effort will be made to complete the assessment during the reserved two-day window, it cannot be guaranteed that the necessary conditions will occur. The assessor will select the most appropriate available venue based on the forecast, sea state, tides and the needs of the assessment.

If the conditions allow all required evidence to be observed on the first day, the assessment may be completed in one day. Where further evidence is required—or the available conditions limit what can reasonably be assessed—the assessment may continue into the second day.

A successful outcome is not guaranteed. The assessor must be satisfied that the candidate has provided sufficient evidence across all required areas and is consistently operating at the required standard.
